Mila, the celebrated single-named guitarist with Spokane roots, wandered half the Western world in search of the idea musical situation, found it, and he has come home. He'll perform a concert of solo guitar works at the Holy Names Music Center at Fort Wright.
"I tried a number of music projects in big cities, thinking that was necessary for a music career," Mila said this week. "But changes in th record industry, especially the rise of independent record labels, makes it possible to live outside the cities. I can choose to live where I want to."
When Mila left Spokane four years ago, he headed for the East Coast. Then he went to London where he wrote songs with his sister, Pearl Harbor, formerly of the English punk band, Pearl Harbor and the explosions.
Following their unsuccesful efforts to put a band together, Mila returned to the States and took up residence in Seattle. But when he found that his home-made debut LP was good enough not only to land a contract with a small Arizona record company but also to win rave reviews, he decided to return to a quieter place.
"Cities lend a lot of uptightness to music," he said. "They lend another air to what I'm doing and I'd rather not be there."
Mila's first two LPs, "Sky Without End" and "Night Jasmine" have been well received by publications like Guitar Player and Jazziz. Guitar Player devoted a full page to an interview (in which Mila was careful to get in a good work for Buzz Vineyard, the Spokane guitar-maker who built his arch-top acoustic).
All Guitars by Mila. Percussion, Recording, Mixing and Producing by Liv Singh Khalsa and Quantum Dream.
