This album is an ode to the Hermetic-Alchemical Tradition. Within this tradition, the bird is often used as a mystical symbol. As far back as ancient Egypt (Khemet), the soul was referred to as “the bird in the cage.” The bird, living its life on both land and in the sky, was considered the messenger of the divine and a representation of that energy which communicates between the inferior and superior, the fixed and the volatile. The Egyptian messenger God Thoth, known also as Hermes and Mercury, was depicted with the head of an Ibis bird for this reason. The Peacock can be considered mythologically related to Argus Panoptes, Tawsi Melek, Quetzalcoatl, Osiris, the “Green Man” or Al-Khadir, St. George, and even the Aboriginal Rainbow Serpent.
Alchemy, the art of Transmutation known as “the Great Work,” was categorized into several phases. A name for the phase which signifies the near completion of the Work is Caudia Pavonis; The Peacock’s Tail. During this phase, colors resembling the tail of a peacock will pass before the Alchemists eyes and the Matter will soon rise out of the ashes, transfigured, like the Phoenix.
